504 diesel w/no compression

I have an XD2F engine here with no compression ( the mechanics words ).
I've taken the head off. The outside lip of the combustion chambers in the
pistons look eroded. Two of the pistons are oily. There is a bad burned smell
about it as well (burned oil?). Could this be just valves? It consumed
a quart of oil every 50 - 100 miles when it last ran, now it won't start
after overheating as a result of a seized water pump.

The reason I am asking all this is the engine doesn't look as bad
inside as I expected. Could it be brought back to life without a rebuild?
This is a " Why not " situation, because I'm looking for another engine
right now.

I know, a grim story!

PS. the engine has 153,000 miles
