If it is an 85 it takes the 3HP, if it is 86 or later it takes the 4HP. The
production date is not necessarily the same as the model year. I would be
leery of a used 4HP, unless you know something about it, especially as it
won't fit your car if it is an 85. The shifter on a 4hp is much less likely
to get jostled into second (it has to go through third first), and it
shouldn't really hurt anything if it did. Actually it shouldn't hurt either
of them. Was there any oil left in the tranny? Maybe you blew a cooler
line and lost the oil. Or, maybe there is enough left of the driveshaft
splines to hold a little in park.

The 4hp has a thumblatch dedent release; on the 3hp you squeeze up on the
handle. If your car has the 4hp it is not an 85. Many 86s have an 85
production date. But the model year is the critical thing, especially
between 85 and 86.

I sell the master cylinder for $70, and I am uusually able to talk people
out of replacing their 'defective' fanclutch, because the fanclutch itself
rarely needs replacing--it is usually a problem in the fanbrush circuit, or
a gap adjustment, or a bad bearing in the fan hub, which are not so hard to
fix. And I have many good used fanclutch asssemblies, if actually required.

If you do need a 4hp22 for 86-87 XN6, I have a good one for $450, but it is
in the car and I am swamped for the next week. I have a good 3hp for $350.

If you will give your mechanic my phone number, I may be able to save you
some money.
