parts for a '87 505 needed.

i've got an '87 505-sti 2.2l, I need a rack (new or used), I could use
four new springs for the suspension, and four new shocks(I need the rears
more then the fronts). And if anyone has a '87 parts-car in the tri-state
area, I sure wouldn't mind having another car to strip, the '83 has very
few compatible parts left on it.

Question:
Why did the mechanics at the local shop say I would need to
remove the gas tank to replace the rear shocks. I can't see anything that
would require the removal of the gas tank to replace the shcoks. Do they
have any idea what they're talking about, they're not peugeot mechanics.
