505 TD '83 head gasket

Could someone give me an idea as to whether it's worthwhile to replace the
head gasket myself. My mechanic said it would cost approx. $1500 for him to
do it. Right now the car rides fine. However, I need to add antifreeze (8
ounces) daily or it will begin to overheat.

I have rebuilt an engine on a '62 Alfa but have no experience with diesels.
Does it matter?

Specifically, I'd like to know how many hours it might take, any special
tools needed? If after disassembling the head, it turns out to be cracked,
can it be repaired? Approx. how much for a rebuilt head?
