505 S turbo '85...oil weights

I recently aquired my Peugeot from my dad (my H**da blew a head gasket).
He put 10w-30 in it in the winter and SAE30 in the summer (I think that is
what he told me). The owners manual says to use 10w-40 year round. This is
what I am inclined to use. I live in Alabama, if it makes any difference,
i.e. it only gets cold (40 F or lower) for a short period of time . What
should I use? Wnat about sythetic oil? I hope i am not opening a can of
worms with the last question.
