85/87 505 Wagon Parts interchangable?

Hello; My 87 wagon rear end and univ/tube are bad so I am going to begin
exchanging parts with my 85 wagon. My first opportunity is going to be
the speedo cable just broke in the 85 they have the same engine but
different trans will the 87 work? Can a novice mechanic(Me) do the job?
Any special tools required? Regards; FHH
