I like to change my shifter from Reverse to Drive at a stoplight
and tell my friends that my car hydraulics. Actually you are
witnessing the beauty of semi-trailing arm independent rear
suspension with rear wheel drive. It is most noticeable with
automatics because the rear end is always recieving power when
in gear. Basically, the twisting of the half-shafts is pulling
down on the rear suspension when in DRIVE and pushing up when in
REVERSE. The effect is stronger when the brake is applied
because the suspension cannot rebound as easily. Of course,
manual cars do the same thing but it is more difficult to notice.
I have a friend with an '88 300ZX automatic. Her car does the
exact same thing.
