I have just had a thought on a few of the coughing/running unsmoothly
problems. My parents owned a 505 that used to run fine then start
coughing/losing power and then stopping. The road service guy would turn up
and the car would start fine, he would leave and then the car would stop.
This happened many times and in the end my mother refused to drive it. The
mechanic (a friend) tried every thing; all the obvious carb etc. In the end
it turned out being the fuel tank. In the 505 (and therefore maybe the 309
and 405) there is an inline filter inside the tank that is non replaceable
that had got all junked up. They took the tank out and blasted this filter
out. They couldn't replace it because it was inside the tank but instead
put another inline filter. This solved the problem and the car ran fine
ever after. Hope this helps.
