Steve: Seems like maybe the multi-viscosity oils got better, because most
people are using them in their airplanes now. The most common ones are Shell
15W-50 (a semi-synthetic) and Phillips XC (which I think is a 20W-50
non-synthetic.) Mobil-1 (a fully synthetic multi-grade) was available for a
time too, but it caused some sludge buildup problems (lots of lead in avgas)
and was withdrawn. Some people with older engines (especially radials, which
burn lots of oil) still use a single-weight oil, like we used to in our cars.
Re: Additives. I've had good experience with molybdenum-disulphide
compounds (like MolySlip). Put some in a whining differential once, (don't
try this with Peugeot limited-slips at home, kids) and it shut right up.
From the description on the can of DTM, I'd say save your money.
