After I sent my previous message on the new headlights, I realized I
should add to the archives my experience regarding the oil hose, the
cylinder head, and what's on the NHTSA web site which I searched after
seeing Rick Matteis's e-mail while I was panicking about my Pug and
thinking cynically, "Gee, maybe I can learn about what else will go
wrong."
Sorry, all you Pug fans, I was pretty depressed. I wasn't a Pug fan at
least for a night.
I also realized that this will also add another possible solution to
Radu's mention of how the 8-valve 405 tends to burn oil a lot.
Before I go on, forgive me if this has all been mentioned before. I
just haven't seen it, and I've been on the list now since October 1995.
Anyway, my Peugeot had been burning a lot of oil for at least the last 2
years (quart every 500 miles), up to May 1996, when the engine began to
skip and just stop. Turns out the 8-valve engine, from 1989 through
1991?, has a defective cylinder head. If you can document that you've
taken good care of the car, PMA will pay for the parts under warranty.
Labor won't be covered, because some kind of maintenance agreement for
labor that they had has expired. Anyway, for all of you who really
understand and work with engines, here is a list of the parts my
mechanic replaced, abbreviated as listed on my work order because I
don't know any of this stuff well (perhaps someone would be willing to
write out the list with the whole words for us): reman head, core
return, housing se, 4 manifold g, valve cover, cyl head g, stud, 2
thermostats, nut washer, 4 stud, spark plugs, oil plug g, repair kit,
metal clam(p?).
Following are the 2 service bulletin summaries I found on the web
(thanks Rick!) that describe this repair and the warranty coverage.

Regarding the oil hose, I just wanted to mention that it was replaced
at almost 66,000 miles, and that my car is now 8 years old, so all of
you with 405's at that mileage and/or age should have it checked.
Thanks for putting up with the long post. Sorry to Radu for not
realizing back in May that this might be helpful to you!
