My son had a problem with gas smell in his 505 Turbo. It turned out that his
friend had borrowed the car and lost the gas cap, then replaced it with one
that didn't seal properly.

When I investigated further, I found that the hose inside the trunk that is
supposed to connect to the gasoline overflow pipe was disconnected, so every
time some gas spilled out of the filler and went down the overflow hole, it
collected in the bottom of the fender, inside the trunk. Re-attaching the
overflow hose cured the smell, but of course he'll need a proper filler cap
as well.
