Never did this. Is this something a shadetree mechanic can do on his own,
without special tools?

The distributor cap has been renewed recently (~6 months ago). The wires
haven't been renewed in the 4 years since I've been driving this car; I
could never push myself into paying US$ 80+ for a new set.

I have no idea where the O2 sensor is or what it looks like. It's only due
to being on this list that I became aware I've got an O2 sensor in the first
place. Same goes for the ECU. Thanks to the list members for all this.

Thanks for your help offer. I might need it after doing some basic reading :-)

Here are some more details: engine starts perfectly every time (1/4 of a key
turn in the ignition), it goes on smoothly @ 1,000 RPM (no oscillations or
misses) for about 1 minute and then the previously described symptoms begin.
During driving you won't notice anything unusual: car accelerates very well,
doesn't stall, full power, very responsive, in a nutshell the engine is as
good as it has ever been in 4 years. The RPM variations are noticeable
mostly after city driving (stop-and-go traffic, short trips resulting in
having to turn off the engine after only 10-15 minutes of driving). After a
longer trip (say, 100 miles) the problem seems to be going away (except for
the misses, I think).
Well, this is about it, thanks for advice.
