Once upon a time (when I was an auto tech.) the #1 killer of an engine was
dirt. Nothing would shorten the life faster. So far as I know, it's still
true. I will buy for my cars the best air & oil filters I can discover. The
more contamination I can remove, the better.
MOTOR TREND recently gave high praise to the new HARD DRIVER oil filter.
This may be only available by mail order...I'm not sure. It has a better
element.
So does the new FRAM (w/ teflon), which is in major stores such as KRAGEN.
It is unwise to buy cheap-o off-brands. These lack a safety release valve
that allows oil to flow if the element in the oil filter becomes clogged.
When I had a Peugeot turbo diesel, I had no option but to buy PEUGEOT's oil
filter.
There was no Purolator or Fram option. That is not so with my 405s, since
Jeep uses the very same oil filter.
