It's straightforward. Just remove the inner lower fender well liner and you
have a straight shot at the situation. You will need a 8 mm square key like an
allen wrench to set the belt tension. I got some square stock of 5/16" at the
Home Depot and cut an end off and stuffed it into a 5/16" *8 point* socket and
epoxied it in, and used a regular ratchet to turn the pulley to tighten it.
You should set the tension with a torque wrench, and the books say what the
reading should be for both a new belt and a used one. The new belt takes more
initial torque and that compensates for new belt stretch.

I then had the additional square stock heated and bent into a 90 degree piece
like an allen wrench, and I use that now for the timing belt and the idler
pulley. It also unscrews the oil fill plug.

Lacking that key, you could get it hand tight (use a 13 mm socket on the hold
down bolt) and then take up the slack with the alternator adjustment screw,
which is to be set at mid-point of its travel slot for the proper tensioner
setup.

ALso, I had my header welded and it looks like it's going to survive the
rebuild, so you can hold your reply about the availability of your second
header.

My engine and tranny is bolted up and hanging on the hoist now. With any luck,
it will be back under the bonnet tonight. The rebuild was fun and enlightening
(especially enlightening to the wallet!)

Ned, (or anyone else who has done this)
Could you pass along any hints/suggestions for the job of replacing the
tensioner pulley. I just got one the other day and was going to change
it this weekend along with the thermostat/temp. sending unit.

Thanks in advance,
