A few more thoughts on the subject...

- the stick magnet through the spark plug hole might be an immediate way
to find bad news but only if it is really bad.

- turning the cams or crank, now out of sync, is tricky

- a hit piston may not need replacement. Unless a ring land is distorted
simple pitting on the top of the piston can often be tolerated after
deburring sharpness etc., even with it in the block. Scars on the piston
walls can be pretty bad. Alhough liners can be replaced, plated bores
cannot.

- as the belt is history, I think removing cams is pretty easy and you can
tell a lot with those out.
