The 80 and 81 XN6 engines have quite a few differences from 82, actually.
Before 82 they have a big aluminum timing cover, with an oil seal, and an
air pump mounted on it, driven by a poly-V belt which also drives the
alternator. There is no air manifold for the air injection. From 82 on,
Bob's observations are correct, except that making use of the later
antipollution stuff would require using the later ECU, and probably the
wiring harness to it.

Despite the advantages of the later engines, using one of them complete would
probably be much more hassle than rebuilding the original, which is easy;
unless there are major problems with the peripheral systems.

Peugeot's part number for a new longblock for 80-81 xn6 is 0100.84. It is
not available in the current pricelist. The 83-85 longblock 0135.19 is
listed
at $3394. The 86 longblock 0135.58 is listed at $5093(!)
