405 DL catalytic converter removal

Greetings,

I just got out of my 1991 405 DL's engine compartment where I tested the
hypothesis that the low performance of my XU9J2 is due to a bad
catalytic converter. To accomplish this I loosened the two bolts holding
together the exhaust manifold and the front pipe.

Sure enough, the engine is more powerful now that gases have an easy way
out.

Do you agree that it's the cat converter at fault? As far as I know this
'piece' is located in the centre silencer. How does one get it out of
there? Does this silencer come off easily, is it a bear to put back on?
Will the engine work properly without a catalytic converter?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have,

Radu
