When I installed my home-brew performance exhaust system on my '84 505,
I
removed the cat and noticed a huge increase in power. Where I live, it
is not legal to remove any original emission control components. Even
though my car passes an emissions test, I have trouble getting it
inspected because they check for the presence on the cat. If you
are subject to the same laws in your area, consider buying a high flow
cat from JC Whitney or something. Most european engines were not
originally
intended to have catalytic converters anyway. Look at my car, it blows
.41 CO and 104 HC without the cat--that's well within the 1.2 CO and 220
HC
limit in my area.
