The cat is usually the very first component off the header pipe (pipe
that
bolts to manifold). This is done to assure the cat stays as hot as
possible.
If the component you are talking about is pretty close to the engine, it
is
probably the cat. I am trying to picture what you described and it
sounds
like some sort of heat shield? If it is, then you probably found the
cat.
Try to find a glasspack muffler to put in the cat's place. If sporty
sounding exhaust is your thing, then a glasspack is a VERY inexpensive
way to get it. I bought mine for $15.00. If you have a rear muffler (I
don't
know too much about 405s), you can keep it on and your exhaust won't be
very
loud at all, but it will have a nice growl and a slight pop to it. The
sound
will change after a couple weeks, as the fiberglass in the muffler
breaks in.
