The temp gage should ride at about 3/4. If it goes above that, the cooling
system is overloaded. The declutching fan, and the electric condenser fan
should come on and bring the temp gauge back below 3/4, then go off.
If the problems are mainly under load rather than around town, the headgasket
may be leaking combustion gases into the coolant. The headbolts need
retorquing every 12K miles on an 85 2L. That might stop a gasket leak, if it
is not too bad. That head tends to crack between valveseats and sparkplug
hole, but the cracks rarely get into the water jacket to cause trouble.
If everything else checks out, you might remove the thermostat temporarily to
see if that helps, but they don't often stick shut, and you should NOT drive
for long without a thermostat. Peugeot supplies three different temp stats
for the XN6--who knows why. The 75 and 82deg stats are cheap, but the 75 is
too cold; the 88 is very pricey, but you don't need it down there--I like
them here in VT. The 82deg is $8, plus $1 for the gasket (from me).
