I have to agree with my dad that the '89 was quicker, but I liked the '91.
The '91 had a flatter power curve, was smoother putting power down on the
pavement, and had a smoother ride (the big wheels). I would really like to
hear from people on this mailing list about the differences between these two
cars (btw, both were 5-speeds). I know that different wheel sizes can affect
the power curve, but with that much effect suprizes me. I keep wondering if
there was a different camshaft angle or a different chip or maybe the car was
heavier too (automatic seatbelts and who knows what all else)--possibly a
different model transmission???.
I any case, I would recommend a K&N air filter without hesitation. They're
cheaper than a chip--less risk involved--and they're reusable. I put one in
my BMW and it made a big difference without voiding the warrentee. You might
also consider a bigger throttle body but I don't know how you'd go about that
project.
On another note, I found an interesting article in this month's Roundel.
Apparently BMW has set up a deal with ZF for remanufactured transmissions.
I think they're talking about automatic transmissions in the article but
what it amounts to is ZF is rebuilding old transmissions for cheap
replacements for original equipment transmissions. These rebuilt units come
with a two year 24,000 mile limited warrenty.
I know my Peugeot has a ZF 5-speed that could use a rebuild. I wouldn't be
surprized if some Peugeots share transmissions with BMW's. I haven't learned
any details yet (like if I could have my transmission rebuilt instead of
geting another unit (I'm kind of attached to the one I have)) but I could if
anyone is interested.
