Thanks, Joe and Bruce, for the guidance.

After checking the accelerator cable, I ignored measurements and
tightened the kickdown cable so that it would kick down with the
accelerator floored. That increased the shift points under any amount of
acceleration vs. previous, and it also stays in 2nd gear when driving at
~25 mph.

Perhaps the 505 (XN6) isn't so underpowered after all. I've been driving
for years without a functioning kickdown.
