I am convinced of the superiority of rear wheel drive... I'm another Maine
winter driver, and i defy anyone to recover a front wheel drive car from a
snowy skid... Once it starts, it's going all the way! They may have a
slight traction advantage on takeoff due to engine weight, but standard
practice around here is to add weight in the trunk, like Tamera mentioned,
which i think cancels the fwd's advantage. The two best cars I ever drove in
snow were a '77 toyauto corolla and a '78 504. I used to carry two 18"
sections of railroad track in the toyauto's trunk (lost them somewhere,
waaah) and that car would go anywhere! I stopped the car in the middle of an
unmown field with about 8" of snow on it, and didn't even spin taking off...
In a fishtail (mostly intentional, I love fishtailing in the snow and go out
and drive in the middle of every storm), i just let go of the wheel and the
car would straighten right out. The 504, same thing, only no weight needed
to be added to that tank... The worst characteristic I have found in front
wheel drive is their disconcerting habit of going straight through a corner
in the snow, with no remedy I could find.... I'd much rather have my rear
end plow into the snowbank than my front end. anyway, that's my two cents'
worth, now if I could find some skinny tires for my 505....
