There are a couple problem areas :

1. It is necessary to use a proper ball joint separator the mechanic at the
Peugeot dealer here used a fork kind on a 405 before I got it he trashed both
ball joint booties making them useless. Princess Auto here in Winnipeg
sells them
mail order for $12.99 Can plus $7. S&H $1.00 Can = $.72 US P/N 2926814
called a tie-rod end lifter best investment a 405 owner can make.

2. The right axle has a bearing and a joint in its middle this bearing
is held in a
bracket by 2 L shaped bolts that tighten down in 2 slots care must be taken
but it is fairly obvious if examined by an intelligent mechanic. The same
jerk who
mucked up the ball joint boots buggered these L bolts up by tightening them
when they weren't properly in their slots. They were bent and the bearing
wasn't
being held in it's bracket. I think the bearing is a 6006 2RS will double
check.

This all happened at the Peugeot Dealer before the car was hail-damaged and I
bought it at an insurance auction.

3. The bearing on the right axle should be replaced as they are cheap
and don't
last much longer than a boot. It is held on by a friction ring that can
easily be pulled off
in a press and pressed back on. Don't let them cut it off like a rear axle
bearing
retaining ring in a rear drive American car it is not that tight.

4. The sway bar links must be disconnected from the A arms.

5. Peugeot uses a little seal protector for reinstalling the axles into
the diff they
must be cautious not to damage the seals.
If your axles are making noise on corners or the boots have been run broken
open
If the axles have been run with the boots broken and / or the axles are making
noise giong around corners you might be better off to replace the outer CV
joints
repacking won't eliminate play or wear.

Hope this helps
