Turned out that the pistons and rings were shot, due to wastegate
failure during one or more of my high-speed manuevers on the winding
roads of the Sierra Nevada, no doubt.
Check the compression on all the cylinders.

I have an oil leak on the LHS of the engine, towards the front, which seems
to be increasing in volume. The oil goes as high as the base of the
distributor. The 3 possible areas of oil leakage that I can see in this
area are
1. dipstick tube (does this have an o-ring seal. if so, what size? If not,
how do you seal it?)
2. crankcase breather pipe (I've tightened the hose clamp on this)
3. base of the distributor (there's no distributor seal, is there?)
Anyone had success in stopping a leak like this?
