Not sure if this is the real reason, but here goes....

As far as I know, the larger (biode) headlamps your refer to might be the
Marchal Trapezoidal biode headlamps that were standard on European (& New
Zealand) 504's. There is also a non-biode type fitted to lower spec
models. I think Cibie also produce the biode form that is cheaper than the
Marchal. From the pictures I've seen on Jim's & other web pages, North
American 504's had rectangular headlampst. Most Australian 504s have a
double round headlamp arrangement. In Oz, the reason for this was, I
believe, purely legislative. Maybe the reasons are similar in North
America.

My own 504 (a GL auto) has the biode lamps, but the car was assembled in
France for export, all New Zealand assembled 504's except the TI's had
non-biode trapezoids. The biode's, if you can get 'em, are really, really
good. I use a 60W bulb in the main (low beam) lamp and a 55W in the high
beam & on high beam these headlights do a fine job of lighting up the road
