Following are extracts from antenna threads recently.
(BTW - I save a lot of the messages that I think might pertain to future
needs; I've started dumping them into a FileMaker database and the search
function is blindingly fast.)

would probably fit your 405 as well. It seems fairly reliable and it's
inexpensive. Reception is about as good as any antenna.

My antenna is OK now, I'd only replace it with something that had
superior reception.

Just wanted to reply to Steve's power antenna problem. I had the same
problem with mine, after checking the connections and verifying that the
motor was shot, I replaced it with one from Canadian Tire. It was $49
cdn and works perfectly. It comes with many attachments to suit a
variety of cars, and took very little to modify to fit the original
mounting location. Some stapping steel comes in very handy for this. I
cannot tell the difference from the outside.

The issue of broken/non-working power antennas comes up often. Each time
I wonder why people want to scrap them? They are not too complicated to
work on. My Mercedes use the same Hirshmann antennas(At least my Peugeots
use them - are they not all hirshmann?)and they are very fixable. Usaully
a broken plastic mast insert. There are several places that sell parts
for these antennas(if nothing else try a mercedes dealer?). For more info
on this subject and a repair procedure look up the Mercedes Benz Mailing
list Web Page. Use your favorite search engine and type in"mercedes benz
mailing list" when you get there click on the "take me to the archives".
This is one slick archive, And those of us on the MBZ list use it
constantly:-) if you've never been there you owe it to yourself to check
this web page and wonderful archive out , it's very well done. Loads of
great info.

I just called Hirshmann to see if I could get replacement parts for my
automatic antenna (it appears that the motor is working, but the circuit
board is not cooperating i.e. it's not switching the motor on and off).

I found their number via http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/ftp/bmw/FAQ.7,
a good FAQ page for BMW. It states " 1-800-225-0524, choose Antenna
sales, and ask for Diana". They were VERY helpful. They gave two
options: 1. They will refurbish fully for $70 (half the replacement
price), or 2. They have a west coast affiliate, who may have the
replacement parts: Walter Odemer Co. 818/846-2819.
