On the top of the filter itself is another "nut" so you can use two
wrenches. Be careful with the hoses and banjo fittings - they are very
expensive to replace.
Included in my toolbox are a few pieces of 12 - 18" galvanized pipe -
diameters are such that they can fit over the end of a wrench for extra
leverage. (Sears has replaced a few sockets and open end wrenches,
though.)

I wouldn't risk it (actually, I did once, and won't again!). Remember the
fuel system is at something like 60 psi. If you don't get a good seal,
they will leak.
