505 turbo fuel pump-HELP

Some questions about the fuel pump set-up on my car. The records from the
PO indicate that the tank & pump were replaced early on. At present, the
car has NO pre-pump in the tank, just the external one. It drones like mad.
And, when under high revs (and sucking major fuel, I assume), the car cuts
out. I think the two are related. Is the only fix to replace the tank/pump?

ANyone have any ideas? The car runs fine, except when you really mash the
accelerator. Then, it builds RPM's to a certain point and goes CHUG in a
violent manner, throwing all occupants forward. Therefore, I'm not doing
much racing lately.
