Please help me celebrate my purchase today of what might be the last untitled
91 505 SW8 Turbo in the US. The story goes back to a snowy Winter night when
My wife and I were coming out of a Japanese Restaurant in Southfield Michigan
and spotted a Red SW8 with NJ manufacturers license plates. I stuck a note
on the windshield: "If you ever want to sell call...." Sure enought 7 months
later I get a call but suprise, It's from a Gentleman from Peugoet Citroen
SA. Turns out they have an office 1 mile from my house. I never knew. So
we did the deal. I got what looks like a window sticker made out to me as a
bill of sale and some document called certificate of origin or something in
lieu of a title. It'll be interesting to see how this passes at the
secretary of state when I try to license it. The car was used as an office
runabout and has accumelate 57,000 miles. At the office they get a rotation
of PSA cars to show off. The manager currently drives a 605 turbo diesel. I
saw it parked in the lot. The European subscribers to the list may say big
deal but here in USA we haven't seen any new Peugeots since 92. The
highlight of the visit was getting to see and sit in a bright Yellow 406
Coupe. What a gourgeous car. It looks like a Ferrari 456. As far as
comming back to the US market I got the answer we have been hearing; That
Peugeot only see's coming back as a local manufacturer, maybe in partnership.
I voiced my opinion that that strategy, if it were true, sounds somewhat
strange. It takes much more capital to tool up a factory than it does to set
up a few dealer to test the waters. It seems like it would make sense to
test the waters first with imports, even if at a loss, before sinking huge
amounts of capital into a factory. Maybe if the factory were set up for
export also so even if the US market flops the plant could export. Another
consideration might be that with states and localities offering incentives to
locate plants maybe risk is reduced or shared. Anyway it's been an
iteresting day.
