A good point that from the 405 on, Peugeot has been rated in the top of their
class, insofar as I've seen in CAR magazine. And that's what irks me about
Peugeot leaving North America when they did. I think a sizeable American
image of Peugeot is of the "Columbo" car, and the like, not as much as the
505 (designed with Americans in mind) or the 405...very much modern in every
way. If the US got the same models as England, they would get AT LEAST 6,000
units sold a year...their figure for Japan.
Today's Peugeots are cars Americans would love to own.
Again, turn over the advertising to Americans. VW did, and kept their hands
off even when they wanted to interfer. Case in point: Picture of the VW
Beetle. Under the picture in bold letters is: LEMON. (VW *really* wanted to
pull this add!!!) Under LEMON was the small print copy that said, even though
this looks like any other VW, their great QA team pulled the car for some
little flaw. It was one of the ad agency's & VW's most popular ads.
Actually, Robert, Peugeot got glowing reviews in American cars magazines
from the 604 on. Only Consumers Reports regularly slammed it.
