When Land Rover brought the Range Rover over (sorry about the rhyme) they
to faced an uphill battle in the mind of the public. British Leyland left
the USA with truely great, but flawed cars. When rover came back they
chose select dealers, and turned many down. They played on the land rover
legacy, and it played well. From what I hear from people's experience at
Land Rover Centres is the Land Rover "replace not repair" philosophy.
Someone brought in a Discovery with a noisy ZF 4hp22, and they replaced
the unit then and there. Land Rover proved that the American public will
buy vehicals that make noises, squeek, have some defects, as long as there
is assurance that it WILL be resolved. Discovery's are notorious for their
lack of quality in fit or finish, and BWM said this publicly. What has
caused their sales to go through the roof is the service from the dealer,
and Land Rover USA's "fix the problem no matter what, and keep a
customer."
