I think this goes to the heart of the matter. WE know these are great cars,
dollar for dollar, or otherwise (as depreciation is a major hit on these.)
When people think French, they think Yoplait, postcards, kisses, but not
cars. Peugeot radio ads "Do you know Peugeot?" do not help. Yet even BAD
radio and TV ads in the US almost did not exist. VW ads went a LONG way in
selling the Beetle. You know the expression "Out of sight, out of mind"? Even
if it's a crummy advertisement, if you forget about the product altogether,
there drop your odds of buying it.
Peugeot DID do somewhat better in their print ads, at least around 1985 and
later, when they were busy racing the 505 TURBO in the US, and kicking butt
againt 2 doors! Would get the attention of those like myself who liked the
mid-1960's Muscle Cars like the Avanti, '65 Chevelle SS, GTO, and such. And
their car brochures were excellent.
