Marian. Shame on you for not changing out the belt while you were
there. Do you still have the original alternator? If so great, take
it to your local Automobile Electric Service company for a rebuild. I
know and trust very much CAR-LECTRIC in Norfolk Va 757-588-5493. They
took my 87 V6 alternator, rebuilt it in a matter of hours for only
75.00 a few years ago. No problem.

The problem as I see it is you most likely have a bad alternator. You
have done the major diagnostic work and I'm assuming you have
eliminated the basics such as corroded/bad cabling, you have correct
belt tension, etc, etc. Not that rare to get a bad alternator from a
parts store. The 90 day warranty tells the story on the confidence
the parts store has in the rebuilder.

Another thing I have seen over the years, is the alternator drive
pully. Most rebuilders go to a generic pully for their units, and it
is quite possible you have a drive pully that is not compatable with
your engine. I don't know what the specifications should be for
yours, perhaps Brian can give them to you.

Good luck.

Ray

'86 Peugeot 505, non-turbo, 1.9 liters, 4cyl.,

Long time, no see, hello everybody,

Last week, in the parking lot of London Drugs, after driving there with my
lights on, my car refused to start. A nice guy jumper-started me but in an
intersection my car stopped and refused to cooperate anymore.

I changed the battery with a new one and I bought an alternator from used parts
(3 months warrantee). It worked, it gave me 13.4V at the battery. It only
worked five days.

Today, the same thing happened again. This time, because of the new battery,
after five minutes, I was able to start the car and get home.

Problem: when I start the car the alternator does not charge the battery. When I
rev the engine to 2500-3000 and let go, it starts working and I can hear a
whistle-like noise coming from the alternator. It works again.

I have to tell you that I did not change the belt and I am really pissed off
because of that. It may happen I did not have to change anything but the belt?

Any words of wisdom? Please help again.

Marian
