of Headlights, Throttles, and West End Peugeot

I was passing through Toronto last Thursday, and decided to stop off
at West End Peugeot to pick up some spark plugs for my 405 Mi16, as
they're bloody impossible to get here in Michigan. I'd never been
to West End before, instead submitting myself to the ravages of
Raymond's (in the days of yore when he still sold pugs), and Bieri. I
had heard good things about West End, and decided to give them a
try. I have to say that I haven't been this pleasantly surprised by a
Peugeot garage since, well.... actually I've never been pleasantly
surprised by a Peugeot garage, not even when I lived in France.

I called them first to find out if they had any plugs in stock, and
when it was revealed that I was seeking parts for a 405 Mi16, they
asked me if I was aware of the headlight recall. They offered to swap
them out for me if I had an hour to spare. I was on my way to
Michigan, but decided I could spare the hour, since it would probably
be months before I got around to doing it again. So I stopped by the
shop, and chatted for a while with Luciano (the owner) and his
wife. Both were very nice, and Luciano put aside the car he was
working on to change my headlights. I must say that after this brief
experience, I heartily recommend West End Peugeot. Luciano even gave
me a key blank (for free!) for the car when I told him that I had been
looking around for one for a while. Wow.

For some reason though, the new lights seem dimmer than the old ones,
even though they are whiter. The pattern looks different too - more
dispersed, and there are significant differences between the left and
right lights. The right light has a bright spot in the center, whereas
the left doesn't - it seems to have a dim spot. Anyone else notice
this? I'm wondering if I should try to find some brighter
bulbs. Anyone tried replacing the stock ones with higher wattages?

Finally, while I was installing the plugs this weekend, I noticed that
there is a fair amount of play in the cable that connects the throttle
to the rpm sustainer (or whatever it's called) - it's the little
vacuum unit that sits to the left of the throttle mount on the engine,
right by the radiator. I really wish the Haynes manual had pictures of
the engine with labels next to all the parts, so one would know what
to call them properly.... In any case, the play is about .5 cm when
the engine was idling. This seemed rather a lot, but then I never
noticed anything untowards while driving. Is this normal?

cheers... charles.
