Anyway, here's what's going on: usually after about 20-30 minutes at
freeway speeds, the fuel feed either becomes non-existent or
over-enthusiastic, and the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on. The only cure is
to pull over to the side of the road, let the car sit for 5 minutes, and
drive for another 30 minutes and repeat. The problem is worse in the
daytime than at night, which leads me to believe it's probably something to
do with heat expansion.
As a related question: is this possibly caused by a bad airflow meter
and/or catalytic converter? If so, are there any other signs I should be
watching out for? The cat isn't glowing or anything after a long run but
the handbrake and sides of the centre console (very noticeable if you reach
into the binnacle under the radio for a tape) become very warm after about
20 minutes, which makes me wonder if the cat is getting too hot.
Now, here's the second thing I've noticed: occasionally (and for no good
reason), you'll hear a relay buzzing behind the dash. It starts off as a
barely-audible series of clicks then graduates to a piezo-electric-type
constant buzz, by which time the 'STOP' light on the dash is illuminated.
The only cure for this one is to go home and not touch the car until the
next day.
This didn't happen to me today (I barely drive the car right now since I'm
running a vanpool), but I did open the fuse box out of curiosity. What I
found was this: fuse 18 (25A, air-con/heater circuit) hadn't blown, but it
was damned hot, and the plastic casing was actually discoloured from the
heat of the fuse itself.
I also checked the relays. All felt OK, apart from the green one along
the bottom edge of the fuse box; the one I'm referring to is not the one
immediately next to the moulded connectors (which is empty), but rather the
one to the right of that. Manufactured by G. Cartier, 12V/25A, 03601 (part
number, presumably).
What's odd about all of this is that a) I didn't have the air-con on at
the time (the fan was, though), and b) that the fan seems to have a mind of
its own: you can't select the highest speed with the dial - you'll actually
get a speed that's about two notches down from that. However, on occasion
and for no good reason, it'll start blowing at top speed until you turn the
fan or car off, at which point you're back to square one.
One other thing (well, two, actually): even with the heater up full, I get
no heat whatsover - what's coming through the vents is only slightly warmer
than the ambient temperature. Also, the dial that selects where the air
should be directed sticks (usually between positions), and can be a real
bugger to get working again. Is it possible that an air-con wire is
getting jammed in there and shorting out?
Anyway, I'd really appreciate *ANY* help anyone can give on this. It's
been going on for just long enough that I'm getting to the
'I-can't-stand-it-any-longer' stage.
Cheers,
- Cam.
