Touring in 505 wagon (Australia)

I have owned a 1985 (built December) 505 8 seater wagon for three
months, in addition to my 1968 404 sedan which I bought in 1989 and have
restored. The 505 has XN1 motor (carburettor, 1971cc), and ZF 3 speed
auto.
It's a great car - comfortable, safe, roomy and strong. Around town
(Toowoomba, Queensland), it's a great device, and supplements our
8-seater Ford Falcon wagon admirably, and is twice the fun to drive.
Perhaps because I've become used to the gearing on the Falcon (100kph =
2100rpm), I find the 505 less enjoyable on long journeys. It cruises at
3400rpm at the local limit of 100kph. At this speed, fuel consumption is
high, and there are many annoying buzzes destroying the otherwise
tranquil and comfortable progress.
The motor seems unburstable, and gives the impression that it could
maintain these revs forever, but I worry!
Does anyone out there have a suggestion as to how I might get the rpm
down? I don't wish to substitute a different gearbox, as the 3-speed is
smooth and efficient, but would be interested in any bolt-on overdrive
that might be available, or any alternative final drive ratio.
Maybe sound deadening is the way to go - it would be cheaper. The 404 is
actually a more pleasant touring car.
Cheers
