405 and 505's closest substitute

Ok we all know that there is no substitute for a Peugeot ;) but seriously
what cars can be considered the closest substitutes for the 405 and the
505?

I'm not looking to jump ship, but rather I'm looking for a couple of more
mainstream cars to use as reference point for pricing Peugeots.

Can any of you car buffs suggest the closest cousins to the 405 and 505?
