IMHO the closest to a 405 is a VW Jetta, base, Carat, and GLI being equivelent
to DL, S, and MI16 405's. I have not owned a 405, but have/had a couple Jettas.
The 505 is probably closest to the 240-300D series Mercedes. I find my 85 505S
TD to be very similar to the 300TD that Mom used to have.

Generally, Peugeots are MUCH cheaper than the alternatives - my 505 was $1200 -
the same place I bought it had several 300D's to choose from in equivelant
condition for $5000 - $8000. I would say the Benz will cost more to run, though
parts are easier to get. Similarly a NICE 89 405 MI16 is $3000, an equivelant
89 Jetta GLI is more like $5500.- $6500, at least here in Maine. The Jetta is
probably much cheaper to run than the 405.
