I think if you owned a 405 you wouldn't think it like the Jetta at all.
The Jetta's ride and handling is a joke in comparison, always reminded
me of a pogo stick. My first car was a '92 Jetta GTX 16v and I've owned
an 89 Mi16. I sold my Jetta to my cousin who still has it and on many
occasions drove them in the same day...It's not hard to see why the
Jetta was $21,000 CDN new and the Mi16 $32,000CDN. The reason VW has
such a big following is because their owners have driven Toyota's or
american cars all their lives so a VW seems like a sports car in
comparison. Start driving some of the polished European and Japanese
machinery and VW loses most of its luster (it sure has with me)

If you pay that kind of money for a Jetta, I have some cars I'd like to
sell you!
You wouldn't even pay $6,000 Cdn (about $4k US) for an 89 Jetta. As for
maintenance costs on a Jetta, my Mother's '91 Jetta averaged $500 a
month in repairs for the last year she had it and that was with only
110k miles on it. She's replaced it with a Subaru Legacy.
