The car that has always struck me as the (dare-I-say) 405 wanabe is the Infiniti
G20, at least as far as the 405 S and Mi16. Heck, I even think the styling that
Nissan chose for it was rather 405-ish. I have never driven the G20, but if it is
like most of the Japanese imports--no thanks! Can we say dull? I'm guessing the
Infiniti couldn't outrun a 405, of any kind, through a windy mountain road if it
tried. The Dl 405 seems more on the level of a base Accord, Camry, or mid-level
Contour. Any comparrison of handling there and, well, no contest. All three of
those cars, however, could leave the 405 (even Mi16) behind. After driving the
Contour V6, I have to say that I was impressed. That car is a smoothly-accelerating
rocket for its class (still a Ford, though).

Basically, 405 = G20....period

Other close comparrisons for the late '80's and early '90's are the Audi 80/90, BMW
3, Saab 900

On the note of the Jetta, uh uh! The class level of the cars is quite different.
The base models may have been similar, but the S far outweighs the Jetta in terms of
luxury and feel. The decked out Jetta always reminds me of those Ford
Taurus-bubbles that come with leather. It just doesn't fit!
