Heresy of heresies, I actually did buy a 1990 Audi 90 Quattro over the 405, when both were new. The cars were comparable, and the Pug was a quick little beast, but the Audi had all-wheel drive, more power (and a smoother motor), more luxurious materials, and an airbag, all for only a few thousand more than the Pug. And those vault-like doors. The Pug had a bigger trunk, but IMHO at the time simply wasn't as good a car.
For the 505, I'd suggest counterparts are the usual suspects: the Volvo 240, the BMW 5 series, the Saab 9000, the Audi 5000/100/200. The Mercedes E-Class seems like a stretch. I'd say the 505 easily beats the Volvo in every measurable parameter (except the one which counted: the love of the Yuppies), and with respect to the Audi and the BMW and the Saab, it's more of a matter of taste. The Saab is the most versatile; the BMW probably the best handling; the Audi the surest-footed in bad weather; the Peugeot the airiest and best-riding. I will state for the record that my '88 Turbo has never been bested in a stoplight derby by any contemporaneous EuroSedan. I just wish Peugeot had spent a little more money on tactile ergonomics (the solidity of the door slam, etc).
