One has to be careful about 504 wheels, if you want to run tubeless tires
safely. Peugeot only went to tubeless tires in 79, while they opened the
center hole in77, so there are two years worth of open center wheels which
are hazardous with tubeless tires.
.
Tubeless tires won't leak air normally on early 504 wheels, but the
difference is a small ridge on the shelf which seats the outer bead of the
tire. That ridge keeps the bead from slipping off the shelf under strong
lateral pressure, as in a skid, where you could suddenly find yourself with
two flat tires.
All 504 and earlier wheels with the small square center hole require tubes,
as do 77 and 78 wheels with the large center hole. This includes both
sedan and wagon wheels. (Wagon rims have the larger stud holes with a
tapered seat for a conventional tapered lugnut). Sedan rims before around
83 (including 505) require nuts with the curved oval-shaped captive
washers, and are a tight fit on the lug stud.
To identify the late tubeless wheels with the tire in place, look for a
visible groove a half inch in from the bead all around the rim.
Most modern tires won't take a tube safely--they tend to have sharp
internal ridges which will abrade through a tube.
