505 blower fan duct clamps: a repair Note

Sooner or later all of you will have to remove and either repair or
replace your heater blower motors. Here is an account that may make
this chore a little less unpleasant.

I recently had to remove the blower fan assembly on my 505 TD to change
the turbo oil feed line (for access). i noted the real crimped and hard
to work condition of both duct clamps and was not looking forward to
refitting. When the oil line was replaced I went to refit the blower
fan, and instead of using the original metal clamps i connected several
long plastic cable ties and used these instead. The beauty is, once
they are on right you just tug on them and they clamp real tight. to
remove just cut and use fresh ties.

I only had medium length ties so I had to connect several to achieve
proper length. There are also the longer and wider ties which would be
even more suitable for the job.

PS: the trick is to begin with an already threaded cable tie, looped
and slipped over and around the duct opening over and into which, in
turn, the rubber duct and then the blower duct will fit. Once ducts are
connected, slip the looped cable tie back over lip, feel all the way
around for proper positioning and then tug on the already threaded tie
end to tighten.
