First, some background info. For several years I've been draining my old oil into a
device called the Oil Well. It's a molded plastic tray with a wire support that holds
it up off the ground, with the tray cantilevered out in front of the support. The tray
has 2 fittings, on the opposite side from the wire support, to accept 2-liter soft
drink bottles. In use, the tray is horizontal and the bottles are at about a 30-degree
angle to horizontal. Oil change done, I just screw the tops onto the (filled) bottles
and take them to my local auto parts store, which accepts used oil for recycling.
The only problem has been that the tray isn't very big in plan view, and it ends up
about 1" or 1.5" below the level of the oil drain hole in my '74 504 XN1. I've never
been able to do an oil change w/o spilling some on the ground, until now. The outlet on
the drain valve points straight down, and the stream is about 1/4" in diameter. No
spillage, no hassle. Oil changes have just gotten a lot more convenient! :)
