Yes, tires can make a world of difference in ride and handling.
My wife's 92 405 DL sedan came with Michelin 185/65 R14 MXL's.
We replaced those with higher profile 185/70 R 14 X-Ones, which
made a huge difference. Much softer ride, and much more precise
handling.

My 91 505 SW8 has 195/65 R 15's, but it doesn't appear that there
is enough clearance in front to switch to a higher profile tire.
Besides, the SW8 is designed for a higher GVW than the sedan. My
505 SW8 is rated for about 4,500 lbs GVW. Curb weight is about
3,300 lbs so net payload is about 1,200 lbs. For comparison, net
payload for the 505 sedan is about 900 lbs. Also, the ratio of
curb weight to GVW is lower for the sedan. It therefore stands to
reason that the suspension design and ride on the two machines must
reflect these differences.

The ride on my unloaded SW8 is much harsher than when loaded. When
it is fully loaded, handling and ride is actually much improved. I'm
a building contractor, and my SW8 is my work car. It carries all my
tools plus a compressor and ladders on my Thule racks. I've removed
the rear seats to increase its carrying capacity, and tire pressures
are at max. My business often requires long road trips, sometimes
overnight, so driving a Peugeot is much more pleasant, and always much
more interesting, than a pickup.
