David,

Don't try to physically trace the wire from the fuel sender. Use an
ohmmeter or volt meter. According to the 504 OWM from Autobooks, the 504
fuel sender have one wire going to it. In the diagnosis for a fuel gauge
not registering, it list the following:

1. no power to the gauge
2. gauge casing not grounded
3. wire between gauge and sender shorted to ground.

I would try the following:
With ignition sw. off, disconnect the wire to the sender unit and check
if shorted to ground. If not shorted, check for voltage with ignition
on. If there is voltage, ground the wire and see if the gauge needle
moves. If there is no voltage, connect the wire to +12V through a
resistor (try 10 ohms) and see if the needle moves. If you can get the
needle to move by either of the above then the gauge and wire is ok and
the problem is the sender.
