Will a rear end from a 5speed wagon fit onto an automatic?

Hey all, ive gotten some leads on new rearends from a bunch of people, but i
called the garage, and asked what was up, i got a revised quote of 7-900
dollars if they can find a used one.... but they told me that a 5speed
wagon's rearend will NOT fit onto my automatic..

my question. This smells pretty ripe, i know it'd be a different ratio, but
won't it fit? what'd keep it from fitting? the guy at the garage basically
told me it wouldnt but he didnt know why.... he said it was maybe where the
driveshaft met up....

Feeling wary of being ripped off.... and i'm now curious... cheers, all.
