Joe:
I agree with Werner about the problem of disloged crud
inside the engine. A very dirty valve cover I'd
wash with solvent and replace the plug tube seals
valve cover bolt seals and the valve cover gasket. When I do this
sort of thing I not only change the oil lots but I also change the oil
filter each time with $2.50 Frams from Target. Another slimey spot,
besides the PCV hoses and screens in the 505 especially in cold climates
is the
long thin dipstick tube. They can get so pukey inside that even
getting a good reading of the oil in the pan from the stick can be
tricky, often I find it difficult to discern whether the
foam/water/oil/cream/etc is from the oil pan or from inside the dipstick
tube which has unwittingly become part of the PCV system . I have used
small bore rifle barrel cleaning kits and coathangers with pieces of rag
securely attached here to good advantage.
If enough crud comes loose to restrict the oil pump pickup screen
it's easy to remove the lower pan to clean this screen or change the
pump.
