There are about 7 qt of ATF in the ZF 3HP22 trans and only 2 come out when
you drain the pan so it takes several changes to get out with the old and in
with the new. And you pay about a $1 per qt...... CHEAP INSURANCE.
I got an 85 SW with 100K in 1992 it had black ATF. On the recommendation of
a Peugeot mechanic I changed the ATF several times till it stayed clean.
The trans was fine till I lost first gear towing a
405 1400mi back from Dayton. If I hadn't had to tow that car the trans
would probably still be fine. And if the guy who had owned the SW for the
first 100K
had kept changing the ATF so it was always pink instead of black the trans
probably would have taken the tow job in its stride.
Remember with lubricants discoloration is contamination and contamination is
wear; excessive...unnecessary...wear.
